Bend Area Habitat to build for Veterans in 2019

The need for permanent housing is a challenge in Central Oregon. Building affordably and finding the land to allow this to happen is getting more difficult all the time. Neither one of these is a surprise to most of our community and supporters.

In collaboration with Central Oregon Collective, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities, and Rimrock Building Consulting, LLC, an independently owned building and development firm, Bend Area Habitat will develop and build 4 brand new homes in the Southern Crossing Neighborhood, available for sale in the summer of 2019.

Why is this project different you may ask?

This particular project is one of great honor to us because it is dedicated to a very vulnerable group of community members, our Veterans. Bend is a recognized Purple Heart City, meaning that, a number of its citizens have been awarded the Purple Heart as a result of being killed or wounded while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  And, that the citizens of Bend have shown great admiration for these men and women who selflessly served their country and this community.

Being unable to afford rent, has been identified as the single biggest barrier to veterans, looking for adequate housing in Bend. Recognizing this issue, Central Oregon Collective sold a lot to Bend Area Habitat for a minimal fee, with the provision to build permanent housing for 2-3 qualified veterans. Soon after this transaction took place, Bend Habitat Family Services begun to reach out to local agencies that serve veterans, such as COVO, Oregon Band of Brothers and Central Oregon Vet Center, to name a few. Word got out to Habitat donor, Sean Bart, owner of Rimrock Building and a contractor of over 20 years. Sean, a veteran himself, has taken on the arduous quest of advocating for his fellow men and women, felt compelled to partner with us in the building phase of this project.

We are looking forward to working with local veterans in helping them achieve the goal of moving out of transitional housing, or rental properties into affordable, decent and permanent homes. Qualified veterans will start the Habitat Partnership Program towards Homeownership in July 2018 and will be able to purchase their homes a year later.
